# Sweat rate

Sweat rate is how much sweat a person loses over time. It changes with heat, humidity, effort, clothing and fitness, so it differs from worker to worker.

Sweat rate is the amount of sweat a person loses in a set time. It is not the same for everyone. Heat, humidity, effort and clothing all change it.

Why it matters: sweat takes water and [sodium](https://jmarsolutions.multisites.ai/glossary/sodium) out of the body. NIOSH notes that heat cramps usually affect workers who sweat a lot during strenuous activity. When sweating lasts for hours, NIOSH advises balanced [electrolytes](https://jmarsolutions.multisites.ai/glossary/electrolyte). See the [heat acclimatization schedule](https://jmarsolutions.multisites.ai/guides/heat-acclimatization-schedule) for new crews, the [jobsite hydration plan](https://jmarsolutions.multisites.ai/guides/jobsite-hydration-plan) and the [acclimatization](https://jmarsolutions.multisites.ai/glossary/acclimatization) entry.
