Heat illness prevention

Toolbox talk

A toolbox talk is a short safety briefing held on the jobsite before or during work. For heat, it reviews signs of illness, water, breaks and what to do in an emergency.

A toolbox talk is a short safety meeting at the jobsite, often at the start of a shift. A heat toolbox talk keeps the plan fresh. OSHA says supervisors and workers should be trained on heat hazards, prevention and first aid.

OSHA's training topics include the types of heat illness and their signs, giving first aid right away, calling emergency medical services, protecting new unacclimatized workers, fluid guidelines, and work/rest cycles. Keep a talk to five to ten minutes on one topic, such as heat stroke signs or the buddy system. JMAR runs onsite toolbox talks as part of its hydration programs. See our heat toolbox talk guide.
