OSHA heat rule

The OSHA heat rule is a proposed federal standard, Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings. As of November 2026 it is not final.

The OSHA heat rule is a proposal, not a final law. OSHA published the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on August 30, 2024. The proposed standard would require employers to create a plan to evaluate and control heat hazards.

The public hearing ran June 16 to July 2, 2025, and the post-hearing comment period ended October 30, 2025. As of November 2026, OSHA's rulemaking page lists it as a proposed rule with no final standard. Until then, OSHA enforces heat hazards under the General Duty Clause and the Heat NEP. Several states have their own heat rules. Track updates on our OSHA heat rules page. This is not legal advice.
